| Federal Member for Brisbane Arch Bevis has welcomed Federal Government funding for the Queensland University of Technology to work on chronic disease. |
| The federal funding of $803,264 will be for four projects involving: |
| A review of QUT’s Faculty of Health undergraduate and postgraduate health curriculum with respect to chronic disease self-management; |
| The development of improved patient self-management abilities following cancer treatment; |
| The preparation of a DVD to support each patient’s engagement in activity following cardiac and diabetes treatment; |
| The evaluation of a new and flexible method for supporting exercise-based lifestyle changes in chronic disease. This involves wearing monitoring devices that allow outdoor exercise to be supervised in real-time by university-trained accredited exercise physiologists based at QUT. |
| Mr Bevis said: “These projects are an important part of the Federal Government’s commitment to improve the lives of people suffering from chronic disease. |
| “They are part of eighty-two projects across Australia. |
| “The Australian community will reap significant benefits from expanded assistance and services.” |
| The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that chronic diseases are responsible for about 80% of the total burden of disease in Australia. |
