| Federal Member for Brisbane Arch Bevis has welcomed the Budget announcement by the Rudd Government of $55 million in funding to expand the Queensland Institute of Medical Research at Herston. |
| It involves the construction of a new thirteen storey building with ten floors dedicated to laboratory and research facilities and one for education, teaching and skills programmes. |
| “QIMR is an ideal place for this type of cutting-edge research infrastructure and I strongly congratulate them on their success,” Mr Bevis said. |
| “As well as playing a vital role in Australian research and innovation, the facility will provide a significant boost to the local economy. |
| “And that means jobs for Brisbane in the midst of the global recession.” |
| One of eight such projects around Australia in the Budget, the facility will enhance recruitment of Australia’s next generation of researchers and technicians and provide additional capacity for collaborative research. |
| Mr Bevis added: “This project boosts both jobs and productivity - the ideal combination.” |
