Arch Bevis - Federal Labor Member for Brisbane

$130,000 for Northey Street City Farm 6 August 2010

A re-elected Gillard Labor Government will contribute $130,000 to the Northey Street City Farm for phase two of its new education building.

The announcement was made by Federal Minister for Climate Change Penny Wong and Federal Member for Brisbane Arch Bevis, following a tour of City Farm’s operations.

Federal Labor will invest $130,000 to make the education building at Northey Street City Farm safer and more user-friendly, as well as more environmentally sustainable.

The funding will be used to provide;

  • A “green roof” with a planted and irrigated surface,
  • Roll-down blinds and screens for the undercover education area,
  • Purchase and installation of a solar photo-voltaic system which will be a working model for feeding energy back into the electricity grid,
  • A paved disabled car-parking facility with a lockable gate,
  • Fencing and signage for the main car park,
  • Signage for the main entrance to the facility,
  • Internal furniture and equipment,
  • Landscaping, and;
  • A storage facility.

“This project will not only make the Northey Street City Farm more usable for the entire community, it will also create a working demonstration of sustainable building and living practices,” Penny Wong said.

“This will mean that the Northey Street City Farm can expand their range of activities and can be accessible for more members of the community,” Arch Bevis said.

“The Northey Street City Farm is an excellent example of sustainable practices here in Brisbane and I look forward to seeing these new works being completed.”
