Mental Health: Taking Action to Tackle Suicide 28 July 2010

Labor’s policy to invest $277 million into suicide prevention has been applauded by Crisis Support Services.

Suicide is a tragedy – for individuals, for families, and for communities in which someone has taken their own life. More than 2000 Australians take their lives every year. A re-elected Gillard Labor Government will invest $276.9 million over four years to prevent the tragedy of suicide in order to reduce the tragic toll it imposes on individuals, families and communities.

Crisis Support Services CEO Alyson Miller said, “This is an extraordinary investment into suicide prevention for Australia that is bound to have an enormous impact on the health and wellbeing of the thousands of Australians at-risk of suicide.”

“It’s wonderful to see that a re-elected Labor Government would invest in the most critical areas for suicide prevention – frontline services, crisis support, men and young people,” she said.
